The next driver's license exchange deadline is January 19th.

But what happens if drivers miss the exchange - and what do they have to do then?

Around 15 million paper driving licenses and around 28 million credit card driving licenses must be exchanged by 2033.

This affects all drivers whose driving license was issued before January 19, 2013 - regardless of whether it was a gray or pink "rag" or a white credit card.

The next exchange period ends on Friday, January 19, 2024.

The reason: Driving licenses should in future be uniform and forgery-proof across the EU.

Recording in a database is also intended to avoid possible cases of misuse and to guarantee that the information on the driver's license is always up to date, as

echo24.de

reports.

Driving license exchange deadlines: What happens if drivers miss the date?

However, what happens if drivers miss their exchange deadline?

Anyone who is caught in a police checkpoint without a valid driver's license must expect a fine of ten euros for violating the order.

Abroad, it can be significantly more expensive if drivers are caught without a valid driving license, as the “German Press Agency” reports.

Drivers who have missed their deadline should therefore make up the exchange as quickly as possible.

In many places this is possible both online and at the local driving license office.

However, it is important that applicants do not forget the correct documents.

For the exchange, an ID card or passport, a biometric passport photo and a current driver's license are required - it costs around 25 euros, plus the cost of the passport photo.

Different deadlines: When do drivers have to exchange their driving license?

For many drivers the question arises: When do I have to exchange?

Two pieces of data are relevant for this: the driver's year of birth and the date of issue.

If the driving license was issued by December 31, 1998, the year of birth is crucial for drivers.

The following deadlines apply:

  • Year of birth before 1953: Exchange by January 19, 2033

  • Year of birth 1953 to 1958: Exchange until January 19, 2022

  • Year of birth 1959 to 1964: Exchange until January 19, 2023

  • Year of birth 1965 to 1970: Exchange until January 19, 2024

  • Year of birth 1971 or later: Exchange by January 19, 2025

If the driving license was issued from January 1, 1999, then the year of issue is crucial.

These deadlines apply:

Exchange deadlines for credit card driving licenses

Anyone born before 1953 can have until January 19, 2033 to exchange it - regardless of the date of issue or the format of the driver's license.

The reason given by the Ministry of Transport is that they want to ensure that older people still want to drive.

Caution also applies to owners of driving licenses issued from January 19, 2013.

Because: They are only valid for 15 years and have to be renewed regularly.
