"Improving visual intelligence and pattern detection": the war machine of artificial intelligence Israel today

2024-01-21T13:26:44.522Z

Highlights: The IDF uses AI capabilities in many ways, which have already proven themselves and succeeded in saving lives in the field. In image processing, for example, AI easily overtakes humans, says Dr. Lior Tabansky, head of the Cyber Resilience Laboratory and a researcher at Tel Aviv University. The technology has been used by pro-Palestinians on social media to claim that images of the massacre are in fact fakes created with the help of technology. An example of this is a photo of an Israeli baby burned by terrorists on October 7, which pro-Palestinian users claimed was a fake.

The growing use of AI technology does not stop on the battlefield either • "Artificial intelligence applications enable the discovery of connections between different parties" • "Also on the home front - the technology has helped identify the faces of kidnapped and murdered people"

It seems that the increasing use of artificial intelligence is slowly beginning to be evident in all areas of life.

As far as Israel and the "Iron Swords" war are concerned, the IDF uses AI capabilities in many ways, which have already proven themselves and succeeded in saving lives in the field.

Ahead of the AI Day conference of the Blavatnik Center for Interdisciplinary Cyber Research, in collaboration with the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at Tel Aviv University, which will be held soon at Tel Aviv University and will also deal with the uses of AI in war, we spoke with a number of researchers and asked them to understand a little more in depth on the application of technology on the battlefield.

"Artificial intelligence can also create value in military applications. In image processing, for example, AI easily overtakes humans," says Dr. Lior Tabansky, head of the Cyber Resilience Laboratory and a researcher at Tel Aviv University.

According to him, "In Lebanon as in Gaza, the enemy hides within the population and underground. Artificial intelligence applications enable continuous improvement in visual intelligence, for example the analysis of information accumulated from continuous collection. In practice, AI manages to detect movements and changes that a human analyst might miss."

"In addition, artificial intelligence discovers patterns of action and connections between different factors - bushes, motorcycles, road routes, etc., which helps the IDF increase the rate and quality of targets.

With enemies hiding underground, the importance of technology only becomes more and more apparent," claims Tabansky.

According to Omri Wexler, a senior researcher at the Cyber Research Center at Tel Aviv University, "Since October 7, we have seen an increased use of artificial intelligence on the home front as well.

The technology helped, for example, in identifying the face of a kidnapped or murdered person from a partial or poor quality photo while comparing it with photos from social networks.

Similarly, the technology is also used to identify the terrorists who took part in the massacre."

"As far as the war on consciousness is concerned, artificial intelligence has been used by pro-Palestinians on social media to claim that images of the massacre are in fact fakes created with the help of technology. An example of this is a photo of an Israeli baby burned by terrorists on October 7, which pro-Palestinian users claimed was a fake ".

"Nevertheless, pro-Israeli users uploaded screenshots that proved that the photo was authentic. And accordingly, there is the whole issue of photos that were really faked and created by AI and all the systems that were developed to identify those fakes. Unfortunately, these technologies are only getting more and more sophisticated."
