Highlights: Miri Regev announced the establishment of a team of professionals "that will enable the land transportation of goods from the Gulf to Israel" In practice: hundreds of trucks have already done this route in the last two months. The activity is managed through the Israeli transport application Traknet, which matches truck owners with customers. "The Houthi problem forced us to find additional solutions. That's why I established professional teams that will work to enable the overland transportation of goods from Abu Dhabi to Israel. The overland transportation of the goods will shorten the time by 12 days and greatly reduce the existing waiting time due to the Houthi problem."

This is what Transportation Minister Miri Regev announced this week, and even published a photo that proved that she did indeed set up the teams, with senior officials from the transportation industry sitting next to her in her office in Jerusalem.

But Regev forgot to mention that this axis is already operating, without the minister ordering its existence.

In recent weeks, hundreds of trucks have completed the overland journey from Jebel Ali port in Dubai, through Saudi Arabia and Jordan, after a successful pilot revealed in Walla Car.

The activity is managed through the Israeli transport application Traknet, which matches truck owners with customers, in cooperation with the logistics company from the United Arab Emirates Puretrans FZCO, and operates the port company in Dubai DP WORLD.

Because of the Houthi attacks, the shipping companies diverted their route around Africa, which extended the journey to Israel by three weeks.

At the same time, the companies jumped the cost of transporting a container from the East from 2,000 to 8,000 dollars, so that now the cost of transporting by truck and by ship is the same, when a truck makes the way from Dubai to Israel in only four days.

Although the axis was intended to also serve the transfer of goods from the Gulf to Europe, for now only Buda trucks transported such loads.

Most of the traffic in the axis is in the supply to Israel of food products, electrical products that were missing in the market such as Dyson vacuum cleaners, oils and plastic materials.

There are days when 20 such trucks arrive at the Sheikh Hussein crossing in the Bekaa, but there are days when only a few trucks arrive.

The goods are unloaded at the checkpoint and transferred to Israeli trucks.

Regev and the senior officials of the transportation branch discuss her initiative to promote the land bridge/Ministry of Transportation

The Ministry of Transportation is currently looking into allowing foreign drivers to enter Israel with their trucks, but beyond the security concern, these trucks are older than the average in Israel, with higher levels of pollution, and the condition of which the ministry does not supervise.

In the past, it was allowed in several cases to unload loaded trucks at the port of Haifa and drive them in secured convoys to the Jordanian border.

Regev has also stated several times about its initiative to promote a train line to transport cargo from the Gulf to Israel, which will greatly increase capacity and shorten delivery times.

However, Merav Michaeli and Israel Katz, who served as transport ministers before, promoted the move during their time in the office, and it is part of an initiative promoted by US President Joe Biden, to connect the Indian market to the Gulf and Europe.

Either way, truck imports will not be able to replace cargo ships in transit The Sheikh Hussein border near Beit Shan currently has the capacity to add about 350 trucks a day, and its increase is under the authority of Minister Regev.
