In the rush for adrenaline, two drivers tread on thin ice.

Your playground?

A frozen Elbe.

But the frosty drift ends unexpectedly and risky.

There are a lot of things drivers have to keep in mind in winter.

The ice must be removed from the slices.

If you don't do this carefully, you risk high fines.

In addition, in sub-zero temperatures, black ice or even the formation of lightning ice is always to be expected.

While some drivers are afraid of it, others apparently see the slippery surface as an opportunity.

So why not use the frozen Elbe as a drift course.

VW drivers drift on the Elbarm: vehicles break in

What sounds like an idea for the video game series “Need for Speed” or a scene from the “Fast and Furios” universe was actually tried out by two men on an old Elbe arm near Radebeul on January 16th.

This was reported by

Normally this is dry, but due to the flood there was a layer of ice there.

However, most of the water underneath had receded again.

So it happened as it had to happen: the VW Golf and a T4 collapsed in the ice.

A cyclist discovered the vehicles in the morning around 7:30 a.m. and alerted the emergency call: "We were reported 'cars in the Elbe in the old Elbarm', we assumed there was a danger to people," said Roland Fährmann (64), Radebeul's city fire chief, the

VW drivers get help after ice drift: fire department sends hefty bill

In addition to the fire department, water protection and rescue services also responded.

However, the helpers found the two vehicles locked and empty on site.

There was no trace of the drivers.

“There was even a drone in use, but no person was found in distress,” Fährmann told

Apparently the drivers (both 36) had made sure that the cars got out of the Elbe in the meantime.

They had asked a farmer to pull the vehicles out of the ice with his tractor.

Nevertheless, the men still have a big bill to pay.

“We still have to count exactly how many emergency services were involved.

The amount depends on this.

But it will be at least 500 euros,” says the fire chief.

The water police are also investigating the ice drifters.

You risk a fine.

There was also a similar case in northern Saxony.

Near Eilenburg, a man wanted to drift on the icy hollow in his Passat.

The VW driver also broke in with his car and had to get to safety through the window.

The Passat, which is still stuck in the ice, was a total loss.

According to the police, rescue will only be possible when there is a thaw.
