It's a classic Sunday afternoon in Mortefontaine, a town of less than 900 inhabitants nestled in a forest area in the south-east of the Oise.
After a cloudy morning, the sun rises at the beginning of the afternoon and, although the temperatures are dropping, a little less than 10°C on the mercury at the end of December, nothing to discourage the mayor, Jacques Fabre, who gets on his bike for a Sunday ride.
After a ride on the country lanes, the cyclist plunges into the woods, "up to a somewhat bare area, which alternates between forest and fields" in this sector located on the borders of the Oise, the Seine- et-Marne and Val-d’Oise.
When, at the exit of a wood, crossing the edge, he comes across in the middle of nowhere on around fifteen people scattered around six vehicles, including five vans.
