In Portugal, two men were sentenced to a maximum of 25 years in prison for the sexual abuse of minors. The 27-year-old main suspect was found guilty of abuse of eight minors, including babies. That's what lawyer Maribel Amaral told the AFP news agency. Accordingly, he had abused his nephews, whom he should take care of.
He also set up an international network for child pornography on Darknet, an encrypted part of the Internet. There he distributed pictures and videos that showed the abuse of children and babies. The main defendant has been in custody since 2017.
Four of the man's relatives, including his parents, were charged with complicity and omission, but the court acquitted them. The convict's mother did not realize that her son had manipulated her, Amaral said.
The second defendant was also found to have been sexually abused. His daughter was among the victims. According to the lawyer, he also shared images of the attacks on the network.
In total, the two men were found guilty of 44 abuse cases and two child pornography cases. The verdict would "go down in Portugal's judicial history," said Amaral. In Portugal, it is the most severe conviction ever made in a pedophilia case.
