A lot of electrical work in the home must be done by a professional.

Where the limits for do-it-yourselfers lie - and what you can do yourself.

In order to save money, many people want to do their own renovation work, such as when they move.

When it comes to painting the walls or installing a shelf, that's no problem either.

When it comes to electrical work, the situation is different.

Some are subject to strict legal regulations that must be observed.

For electrical installations, you need a specialist

"Work and repairs on the electrical system or on electrical devices should not be carried out by laypeople, but should be left to qualified electrical companies," explains Maren Cornils from the Central Association of German Electrical and Information Technology Crafts (ZVEH) to

t-online.

For laypersons, the danger of seriously injuring themselves during such work is too great.

The legislature also sees it this way: In Germany, laypersons are even legally prohibited from modifying, repairing or even installing electrical systems that are connected to the public electricity supply network.

This is stated in § 13 of the Low Voltage Connection Ordinance (NAV).

However, many do-it-yourselfers are not even aware of this.

Although there is no serious threat of a fine, if the self-installation causes damage, there is a high risk that the insurance company will not pay.

In addition, private individuals would unnecessarily endanger themselves.

If you want to install a socket or connect a ceiling light, you should always call a specialist company.

By the way, multiple sockets are often more dangerous than you think.
