Green light from the EU Commission to a 450 million euro Italian scheme to support the integrated production of renewable hydrogen and electricity in brownfield sites.

The measure is financed under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (Pnrr).

The aid, highlights Brussels, has the aim of facilitating the transition to a zero-emission economy, in line with the European Green Deal.

The scheme was approved under the rules of the EU temporary crisis framework on state aid to support the European economy and businesses in the green transition.

The public support allocated by Italy will take the form of direct grants to cover investment costs, with a maximum aid amount per project of €20 million to be allocated by 31 December 2025. Projects will be selected through a bidding procedure competitive "open, clear, transparent and non-discriminatory".

In its analysis, the European Commission found that the Italian regime complies with the conditions set out in the Temporary Crisis Framework on State aid, and "is necessary, adequate and proportionate to accelerate the green transition and facilitate the development of certain economic activities, which are important for the implementation of the RePower EU Plan and Green Deal Industrial Plan".
