The Geranium restaurant in the Danish capital Copenhagen has been voted the best restaurant in the world for 2022 by experts.

It landed at the top of The World's 50 Best Restaurants ranking.

The ranking was presented in London on Monday evening.

The Peruvian restaurant Central in Lima follows in second place.

Two Spanish restaurants, Disfrutar in Barcelona and Diverxo in Madrid, took third and fourth place.

As the best German restaurant, Berlin's Nobelhart & Schmutzig came in 18th. The Tim Raue restaurant, also located in Berlin, made it to 26th place. The Colombian Leonor Espinosa was honored as the best female chef in the world.

Below is an overview of the top ten and the German winners:

The ranking was created in 2002 by the British magazine »Restaurant«.

For the list of the 50 best restaurants in the world, 1080 experts give their assessments, including chefs, restaurant owners and journalists.

Critics repeatedly accuse the ranking of a lack of transparency and other weaknesses.

Criticism often comes from France, where top chefs often feel left out of the rankings.

In this year's ranking, too, French restaurants don't do particularly well: they are only represented three times in the top 50.

The Parisian restaurants Septime (22nd place), Le Clarence (28th place) and Arpège (31st place) are listed.

The full list of all 50 restaurants and their rationale can be found here.

No meat - instead lightly smoked lumpfish roe with milk

Last year, the legendary Noma in Copenhagen led the ranking.

Already in the years 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014 the restaurant won the top place in the ranking.

The Geranium - run by star chef Rasmus Kofoed - was the first Danish restaurant to be awarded three stars by the French gastronomy guide Michelin in 2016.

Last year it came in second in the “The World's 50 Best” ranking.

The menu has been changed since 2022;

since then no meat has been served in the Geranium.

Instead, for example, lightly smoked lumpfish roe with milk, kale and apple, and wild mushrooms with beer, smoked egg yolk, pickled hops and rye bread.

This year's award ceremony should actually have taken place in Moscow.

But it was moved to London because of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
