The "green light" test presents a frightening situation in the most populous cities in the country • Bat Yam leads in the number of pedestrian casualties, followed by Tel Aviv-Yafo, Afula, Ramat Gan and Hadera

Bat Yam is the city with the most pedestrians in road accidents per thousand residents, according to a survey conducted by the "Green Light" association on the occasion of Road Safety Week.

Pedestrian injury data were analyzed over the past three years (2020-2018) in cities with more than 50,000 residents.

According to the Green Light report, in Bat Yam, 314 pedestrians have been injured in the last three years, ie 2.43 pedestrians injured in road accidents per thousand residents. Tel Aviv-Yafo is in second place with 1,074 pedestrians injured in the last three years - 2.33 pedestrians injured In road accidents per thousand inhabitants, however, it should be noted that Tel Aviv-Yafo concentrates many citizens every day, so the number of pedestrians in it is high compared to other cities.

In the years examined, 102 pedestrians were injured in Afula, which places it in third place on the list of dangerous cities for pedestrians.

It is followed by Ramat Gan with 283 pedestrians at the time, and Hadera closes the top five with 166 pedestrians injured in the last three years - 1.71 pedestrians injured per thousand residents.

In Jerusalem, the most populous city, 1,039 pedestrians were injured in those years (in second place after Tel Aviv-Yafo), but compared to every thousand residents, the capital of Israel is in 17th place in pedestrian accidents in accidents with 1.11 casualties per thousand residents.

An examination of the cities in Arab society shows that in Rahat (31st place) 47 pedestrians were injured between 2018 and 2020, meaning 0.66 pedestrians are injured in road accidents per thousand residents.

Umm al-Fahm is immediately behind in the table with 26 pedestrians in these three years.

In Nazareth, the largest Arab city in Israel, 22 pedestrians were injured in road accidents in the years surveyed - 0.28 pedestrians were injured in road accidents per thousand inhabitants, the fewest in the big cities.

"Pedestrians are a particularly vulnerable population," notes Erez Kita, CEO of the Green Light Association.

Therefore, the responsibility for the safety of pedestrians rests with the Ministry of Transport and Road Safety, and especially with the heads of the authorities and the cities, they know very well where the pedestrians are injured and what are the vulnerabilities that endanger them.

In those places, priority must be given to the safety of pedestrians over vehicles by curbing the speed of travel and reducing traffic.

The State of Israel is dangerous to pedestrians, and this reality must be changed by changing priorities in favor of pedestrian safety. "
