GUALDO CATTANEO (PERUGIA) - The best "Pale" malt in the world is made in Umbria: gold medal at the Malt Cup 2024, the only sector competition in the world, held at the end of February in the city of Davis in California (USA) , for the "Pale" malt of the Italian artisan Malteria (Mia), the malthouse affiliated with Mastri Birrai Umbri, the brewery that is part of the Farchioni Group based in Gualdo Cattaneo (Perugia).

Mia is the first and only Italian and European malthouse awarded in the United States.

The award-winning malt is entirely Italian in production, from cultivation in Umbria to malting, and is regularly found on the market: a malt of the "Pale" type, with a pale light colour, typical of the Anglo-Saxon recipe, therefore among the most important for use in the world.

"Present as a base in varying degrees, especially in the dark beers produced by Mastri Birrai Umbria, it is one of the most important malts for use in the world. It is difficult to make: the prize comes because our malt is very performing for the master brewer , offers a nice aroma and a nice extract. Furthermore, since it is not a niche category, there is great competition, therefore this medal represents an exceptional result", explains in a note Gian Franco Regnicoli, master malter of artisanal Malteria Italian.

"This recognition, which comes after winning a silver medal in 2021 - continues Regnicoli - confirms not only that in Italy we can make excellent malt, but also that our malthouse has taken a further important step towards quality in recent years ".

According to Regnicoli, the gold medal "increases the value of the entire supply chain, completely Umbrian, even within the company: from the selection of the high quality malting barley seed, to the cultivation, to the conservation, up to the touch of the "artisan to transform the quality ingredient into the beer loved by our enthusiasts. A success that can be a stimulus for our colleagues and confirms the reliability of our malthouse to the breweries who use it."
