The private business school Pasold-Weißauer from Holzkirchen has already implemented what state business schools are only allowed to do from autumn: for the first time, primary school students were able to transfer directly to the private school in 2023.
In an interview, headmaster Stefan Klein reports on his first experiences.
Holzkirchen
– Business schools train young commercial professionals.
Like secondary schools, they lead to an intermediate school leaving certificate.
But so far the transition only takes place in the 6th grade.
That should change: Starting in the coming school year, the Ministry of Culture is testing the introduction of a 5th grade at business schools.
The private business school Pasold-Weißauer in Holzkirchen has been offering a 5th grade since this school year, which is why we asked headmaster Stefan Klein (48) for a classification.
Mr. Klein, the Ministry of Culture is starting a school trial for business school from the 5th grade. You already have a 5th grade class. What is actually new about this school experiment?
Stefan Klein:
The aim of the school experiment is to make it possible for all business schools to have 5th grade, including state ones.
At the moment only the private ones can offer a 5th class.
The background is a court case that a private business school from Traunstein brought and won.
Until then, business schools were the only type of school in Bavaria that did not have a direct connection to primary school.
Then, when the decision to transfer is made, i.e. after the 4th grade, the business schools were unable to access students.
That was always our problem at information events.
We had to tell the parents that they would have to temporarily park their child at a different type of school for a year.
In this respect, the school experiment is logical.
Among other things, it is now testing which subjects are offered and which form - full day or classic morning model - is particularly suitable.
What experiences have you had with 5th grade so far?
Stefan Klein:
Very good ones.
At first we were very excited about what was to come.
The students are of course still very young and have different needs.
They bring a different life to the school because some of them are still very lively and playful.
But that also gives us a lot of joy.
Such young students certainly pose a challenge...
Stefan Klein:
Of course you have to design the lessons a little differently, more child-friendly and more playful.
But we see it as an enrichment.
There are no problems at all.
Does your timetable differ from the one provided for in the school experiment?

It's almost the same.
We just named the subjects differently.
For us, for example, history/politics and society simply means history.
This is more grippy.
Does the 5th grade take place as a full-day program?
Stefan Klein:
Yes, we decided on the open all-day event.
This corresponds to parents’ and students’ desire for flexibility.
You can take advantage of the all-day offer if you need care, but you don't have to.
Does the school experiment have an impact on your 5th grade model?
Stefan Klein:
Not at the moment.
But when the experiment is completed and it is clear how it will be implemented, we may have to go along with it.
Do you want to offer a 5th grade again in the coming school year?
Stefan Klein:
We would love to offer that again.
Because we have consistently positive experiences with it.
