President Sergio Mattarella told webcreators at the presidential Quirinale Palace Wednesday thatarticle one of the Italian Constitution states that the Italianrepublic is single and indivisible.
"I chose Article 1 which opens the Constitution because it is summarizing five elements: one; republic; democracy; labor and popular sovereignty. One, not just an article, means that Italy is one, not a sum of republics or even a federation of republics," he said.
"A democratic republic means that Italy is a republic characterized by freedom and equality, also in social and economic terms".
Mattarella also told the creators that he hoped that participation invoting grows.
"A constituent defined popular sovereignty as inalienable: the people to whom it is attributed must exercise it, in order to maintain, consolidate and develop democracy," he said.
"This is also why I hope that voting participation in elections will increase again.
"That, more than any other, is the moment when the citizen becomes the protagonist, and exercises sovereignty".
